Visit to the Bridget Riley – The Curve Paintings 1961-2014, exhibition at The De La Warr Pavillion Bexhill-on-Sea. Nice little show – a long drive to visit though! Jonathan Jones reviews the exhibition for the Guardian newspaper.

Some of these paintings are extremely difficult to view.  The wavy lines create movement, like a migraine headache.  I’m not keen on pop-art but I like Riley’s op-art.  Wave patterns are referenced in many of the works, but other paintings, although derived from wave forms, are much more abstract. I prefer her coloured paintings to the black and white wave forms.  Exhibited drawings on graph paper hint at her working method, but how did she scale this work up on to her large canvases?

Painting from the Riley Exhibition – her paintings are large!

My camera is doing a ‘Bridget Riley’!

Spent a little while watching dust motes in the beam of a torch, outside, last night. Amazing the air is full of them swirling and eddying around, like watching plankton underwater.

CRIKEY – Is this for real?  Yes it is!  Here is all you need to know about making your own lead white paint.  Scroll down the page to find the recipe.

The reason that I use lead white is that it is slightly transparent and doesn’t create opaque colours when mixed with transparent pigments.

I have started to read ‘In the Holocene’ edited by Joan Ribas.  It was produced to accompany an art exhibition held at MIT. The main proposition of the book is that Art is a Speculative Science.

ArtThe expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power” from Oxford Dictionaries.com.

Science  “The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment” from Oxford Dictionaries.com.

Speculative “Engaged in, expressing, or based on conjecture rather than knowledge”  from Oxford Dictionaries.com.

Conjecture “An opinion or conclusion formed on the basis of incomplete information”  from Oxford Dictionaries.com.

Finished? – July 2015

Self portrait July 2015 – finished? No!  Straight out of Planet of the Apes.  Must stop thinking about monkeys with consciousness.

Interesting discussion on Newsnight last night (10/07/15). about whether cultural regeneration paves the way for economic regeneration.  No, says Richard Senett from the LSE.  Sennett says that good quality education, good quality schools and good quality housing are more important than museums/galleries/music venues etc.
